A Kid-Friendly Connecticut Farmhouse

New construction is becoming ubiquitous with the modern farmhouse style, but the look isn’t for everyone. Clients of Lina Galvao of Connecticut-based firm Curated Nest purchased a new build but wanted to bring some modern warmth and worldly eclecticism to the traditional farmhouse-style home. New light fixtures, kid- and dog-friendly furnishings, and a cohesive color scheme turned the once cookie-cutter house into a vibrant, welcoming family home.

Adding Color and Character to a Connecticut Farmhouse

The kitchen’s existing gray-and-white color scheme was pretty, but a little safe for her’s client’s tastes. Lina drew on the color of the home’s existing beams to introduce rattan pieces that bring texture and shape to the open-concept space that holds the kitchen, living space, and dining area of the family home. New brass and black pendants add a note of sophistication, and tie in with black accents in the rest of the space.

Chic, Comfortable Details

Rather than a traditional table and chairs, Lina chose a banquette upholstered in a durable, wipeable ostrich leather with a custom oval-shaped tabled by Kravet. The chairs are a modern take on a traditional Windsor style and are painted a punchy navy blue — a shade Lina carried throughout the space. The arrangements is topped by a Made Goods chandelier made of coconuts, a textural note of tropical glam.

Unique Farmhouse Elements

A mix of materials is what makes the living space sing. Rattan, bone inlay, and reclaimed wood surround the family-friendly sectional, no doubt the scene of many game and movie nights. Driftwood accessories, tables inspired by Middle Eastern design, and lush tropical houseplants all point to different parts of the globe, bringing a worldly, eclectic vibe.
