A Color & Pattern Filled Atlanta Family Home
With 7,900 sq. ft of historic charm, five bedrooms, and five and a half baths, designer Mandy Chang’s first Atlanta project brought plenty of opportunity for thinking out of the box. The clients, a family of five with three young children and two dogs, lived overseas when they purchased the home and had yet to move to the area. After fleshing out ideas over many Zoom calls spanning continents, Mandy helped the new homeowners envision a fresh, sophisticated, practical home for their active lifestyle.
Mandy and her team thoughtfully took the project from start to finish, curating and custom-building pieces to withstand the daily bustle of life with young kids and puppies while maintaining an elevated, cohesive aesthetic. The final result is bold yet approachable, with Mandy skillfully balancing risks in pattern and texture while ensuring the space feels livable and well-loved. She embraces color with confidence, creating a balanced, tonal palette that energizes without overwhelming. We love how Mandy achieved a unique harmony between modern flair and timeless character by preserving elements of the home’s historic charm. Scroll on to see more from this fun-filled project.

An inviting formal living room
A grasscloth-clad formal living space welcomes you into the home, setting the tone for the project with a monochromatic palette that mixes earth and jewel tones. The materials Mandy incorporated here feel equally relaxed and luxurious, from the formal velvets on the seating to the warm wood materials on the coffee and side tables. Subtly patterned window treatments draw the eye to the windows and the properties surrounding trees.
Pattern statements in the dining room
Adjacent to the formal living space, a pattern-filled dining room introduces imaginative elements to the home, with palm-printed wallpaper and a shimmering gold ceiling. Rather than playing it safe and opting for a solid on the dining chairs, Mandy chose a striped upholstery material, adding to the contrast and playfulness of this room.
A fresh & sophisticated living room
Incorporating fresh color is a great way to add a modern feeling to a historic home while still keeping with the original charm. Mandy selected Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue in the family room to add a soft wash of color without overwhelming the space. Warm wood custom shelving flanks the fireplace and contrasts the cool blue walls, giving the client space for their book collection.
The room’s furnishings also support the balance of warm and cool tones in this space, from an inky blue sofa to brown leather chairs.
The tucked-away game nook
Sometimes, the most interesting spaces in a home aren’t the ones you see right away but the ones tucked back into corners made for intimate gatherings. In this home, the moody game nook provides that element of surprise while acting as a secondary gathering space for entertaining.
A playful kid’s office nook
Kids’ rooms are often a place for play and experimentation, and we’re always excited to see how designers think outside of the box with color and pattern in these spaces. In the client’s daughter’s room, Mandy designed a built-in office nook for homework, craft projects, and storing school supplies, brought to life by Benjamin Moore’s Marlboro Blue on the walls and accented with Benjamin Moore’s Schooner on the trim and lower cabinetry.
