With an industry reputation that precedes her, Marie Flanigan has become synonymous with good taste and timeless design. Her architectural background lends a distinct perspective, emphasizing the delicate balance of form and function that’s become a recurring theme within her work. In Marie’s newly released book, The Perfect Room: Timeless Designs for Intentional Living, she shares her wealth of knowledge, delving into the common challenges and creative solutions to designing a beautiful home.
Here, Marie details what to expect from her second book while uncovering the hallmarks of her eponymous firm’s signature style. She discusses how to transcend trends, and puts those principles into practice with an inside tour of her recent work.
“The Perfect Room” delves into the nuances of designing timeless spaces. Are there any design principles that you believe are universally applicable, regardless of the style or space?
One design principle I find universally applicable is the balance between form and function. No matter the style or space, a room must first serve the people who live in it. Every piece—whether furniture, art, or accessories—should have a purpose, while also contributing to the beauty of the space. I also believe in embracing natural light and organic textures. These elements create a sense of warmth, cohesion, and authenticity that transcends trends, while allowing a seamless experience when moving from room to room.
“By prioritizing timeless elements like light, balance, and scale, I’m able to create spaces that feel fresh yet enduring.”

Tell us about a project that’s been particularly pivotal for you as a designer.
Designing my own home was pivotal. It became a true test lab, a space where I could experiment with ideas I had been envisioning for years. From custom millwork to mixing modern and traditional elements, it allowed me to push boundaries and refine the details that define my design philosophy. The experience was both personal and professional—it deepened my understanding of how spaces should not only look beautiful but also function effortlessly. Being featured on AD was such an honor and a reflection of the thoughtfulness and intention behind every choice we made.
How do you keep your design work fresh while maintaining that elusive sense of timelessness?
I stay inspired by focusing on what feels authentic—whether that’s through art, nature, or travel. My design philosophy is rooted in a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and materials that stand the test of time. I love layering natural textures, mixing old and new, and incorporating pieces that tell a story. By prioritizing timeless elements like light, balance, and scale, I’m able to create spaces that feel fresh yet enduring. It’s about curating thoughtfully, staying curious, and never losing sight of the way a space should make you feel.
Inside a Marie Flanigan Interiors Houston Home
Built From the Ground Up
When given the opportunity to design an 8,000-square-foot new-construction residence for their Houston clients, Marie and her team rose to the occasion. The years-long project required a healthy dose of patience and precision, as they worked in close partnership with Dillon Kyle Architects and The Southampton Group on every detail of this modern organic home made for family living.
An overarching desire for simplicity and cohesion guided the design plans, with clean lines and natural tones featured throughout. The result, Marie and the team agree, is a refined, cohesive home that balances modern aesthetics with timeless craftsmanship. Browse below for a closer look inside.
