The Best Bathroom Sconces in Every Finish

It’s been a minute since we revisited everyone’s favorite Archway to Heaven primary bathroom. We completed that renovation project nearly two years ago, and out of all the details, I’m still asked about that brass double sconce on a regular basis. It’s funny how one seemingly small element can anchor a space, and that’s why we’re dedicating today’s content to the best bathroom sconces.

While I’m partial to antique brass, I also believe there’s a time and place for every finish. Drawing from my own experience and the work of several designers I know and love, this round-up is a combination of inspiration and shoppable pieces for an instant refresh.

Brass is having a big moment, but it’s more than a passing trend. The trick is determining the right style of brass that doesn’t lean too bright or yellow. In our primary bathroom, I chose a hand-rubbed antique brass for a more unfinished look. I love how the fixture looks distinctly vintage and sits beautifully in between our black arched mirrors. This particular style of brass is perfectly imperfect, and that’s just how I like it.

When you think of the best bathroom sconces in matte black, I bet you think of something modern. And while there are plenty of stunning fixtures in that category (see Brooke Wagner’s work above), that’s not the only route to go. O’Hara Interiors shows us how to make a statement with matte black sconces that lean a smidge more classic. Not matter what look you’re aiming to achieve, you really can’t go wrong.

I get it: polished nickel seems like the safe, sensible option. But I’m more and more convinced that this classic finish is poised for a major comeback. I’m obsessed with how Anne Macdonald used a polished nickel double-armed sconce to play off the checked cafe curtains and zellige floor tiles in her recent lake house project. It proves when you use polished nickel alongside statement patterns, there’s nothing ‘safe’ about it.
