A Materials-Focused Family Bungalow
When designer Tova Kook and her firm, TK Design, set out to begin transforming their client’s contemporary bungalow into a cozy and dimensional family home, the vision was clear: organic tones, a neutral, warm-toned palette, and clean, sleek lines. Although the client had grown up in a traditional-style home, she expressed feeling surrounded by too much shine and clutter and wanted her space to feel like the opposite.
Tova and her team got to work on this full ground-up project, from sketching to the exterior, tweaking the architect’s designs, managing the lighting plans, and executing every single finish from beginning to end.
While this house is high-end in build and finish, it’s kid-friendly and located on a true bungalow colony block. With kids always running in and out of this home, the design needed to allow for durability, hidden storage, and comfort. A Kitchen Designed in Contrast
If we had to choose a singular wow moment in this home, it would be the jaw-dropping kitchen designed with one black accent cabinet wall. The surrounding solid oak cabinetry contrasts the bold moment at the center, while the natural stain finish brings warmth to the grey and black veined marble.
Tova and her team designed the kosher kitchen with two sinks, two dishwashers, two ovens, and a secret pantry. Although you’d never guess, one of the “cabinet doors” allows entry into a walk-in pantry — talk about an entertaining hack!
The Playful Dining & Entertaining Spaces
The contrast of light and dark continues in the dining room, where a white chandelier adds texture and interest to the white walls, bringing drama to the black dining table and chairs.
In the secondary dining space off the kitchen, a warmer palette compliments the sun-filled room and makes for a perfect gathering nook to enjoy casual meals, play games, or host friends and family. A sculptural light by designer Lindsey Adelman draws the eye and brings the perfect “jewelry” element to the room.
