A Minimalist Family Home Layered in Texture

Today’s home tour is a minimalist family home draped in layers of texture. We’re back with another gem of a home by Katie Monkhouse Interior Design, founder of Westpark Home and long time Kwin client. You may remember that a couple of weeks ago, we featured another dreamy project by the Marin County designer, a textural stunner in San Francisco. Today, I’m excited to showcase another Bay Area beauty, located in the city’s coveted Pacific Heights neighborhood. This home is rooted in neutrals and reflects Katie’s signature warm, modern, and inviting style.

Minimalist family home layered in warmth living room with marble fireplace

The Charming Living Room

Isn’t a marble fireplace just an instant charmer? Historic San Francisco homes like these have the most incredible architectural details that really add so much character to a space—the classic marble fireplace juxtaposed with crisp curved built-ins. Katie used her all-time go-to paint, Benjamin Moore Simply White, throughout the home. It allows the natural wooden furniture to layer in without overwhelming the space. A subtle detail that anchors everything, the circular wooden coffee table with one acrylic leg perfectly combines Cali Cool with a touch of glam.

Minimalist bedroom with warm texture in San Francisco family home

The Retreat of a Primary Bedroom

Upstairs in the main bedroom, Katie opted to switch things up with the wall treatment and landed on Color Atelier Lime Paint in Wabi. A tufted headboard in a dark salmon shines in the otherwise earthy, neutral space. Low profile beds like the one shown here are really key in achieving that chill, effortless look in the bedroom—you won’t find anything overly formal here.

Additionally, nightstands like the ones Katie selected are excellent due to the open space underneath. They provide the perfect amount of storage without taking up visual weight. There’s a small drawer for storage and a pull out tray for additional surface space for other bedroom essentials.

Last but not least, a plush reading chair is an essential in any primary bedroom, if space allows. I’ve found that a comfy lounge chair is imperative in a bedroom whether for putting on shoes or keeping piles of laundry safe. The deco shape of this oversized arm chair in a nubby shearling feels super elevated and will transition to other rooms in this minimalist family home for years to come.

The Fun Family Room

Katie designed the home’s family room so that it’s colorful and not too serious. Mixing a light blue sofa with tomato red coffee tables is playful and unexpected. These are the small moments in Katie’s work that really exemplifies her signature style. The custom built-in entertainment center offers ample storage space for books while being able to accommodate a large TV.

This home is a masterclass in keeping a family home relatively minimalist; exemplifying that warmth can certainly shine through without over committing- to pattern. To involve some of this same spirit into your own space, get the look below.
