A 70’s Inspired Bachelor Pad

Interior designer Shannon Eddings is known for her artful, layered interiors and unique approach to color and pattern, making her the perfect one for the job of this 70’s-inspired bachelor pad.

After purchasing a home in the neighborhood he grew up in, Shannon’s client came to her with a brief for transforming his 1983 home into a dreamy and vibrant gathering space. His love for 70’s music and penchant for eclectic English design inspired Shannon and her team to entirely gut the house and bring personality to every corner after its spec-like early 2000s remodel.

70's inspired bachelor pad bedroom with bold wallpaper

In the thick of Covid-19, the project called for many creative solutions — from vintage rugs in nearly every room to custom headboards and a recovered eBay sofa. The result is just as playful and unexpected as you’d imagine.

The Quirky 70’s Living Room

An art-deco Chinese rug grounds the space and sets the tone for the formal living room, introducing a bold color palette that carries through the home. You’d never guess the serpentine sofa was a re-covered eBay find, and the deep velvet blue makes the space without overwhelming it. This room creates just the right amount of drama while still feeling inviting and not-so-serious — what more could you ask for in a first impression?

The Statement-Making Dining Room

One look at this dining room, and it’s hard not to imagine hosting a holiday dinner party or morning brunch soiree amidst the classic William Morris printed walls and antique furnishings. This space is almost entirely vintage-sourced, and we love how the mix of styles and design influences brings some tension to offset the traditional details.

A Less Wild Kitchen

While the kitchen didn’t need a lot of heavy lifting (the previous owner updated it), fresh paint, hardware, and lighting gave it a new life. They saved money in the kitchen nook by sourcing the antique dining chairs and light fixtures above the table on Craigslist, which look incredibly elevated paired with custom Zak and Fox curtains — a perfect example of mixing high and low.

The Unexpected 70’s Inspired Family Room

It’s hard to imagine this room without the bright sea-green built-ins, but Shannon had to get a little crafty to revive the old and outdated previous shelves. Instead of tearing them out, they added custom moldings around the existing build and re-painted them to steal the show. You can’t go wrong with built-ins in a family room, and we love how these create symmetry for the L-shape sectional, Turkish Oushak rug, and mid-century-inspired armchair in this space.

The Wallpapered Bedrooms of Our Dreams

Shannon split her client’s project budget almost exactly 50/50 on remodel costs and furnishings and decorative, and you can tell they invested heavily in wallpaper, lighting, and custom furnishings when you see the bedrooms and bathrooms. They took a lot of risks with color and pattern in these spaces, and it paid off to create a distinct feeling in each room.

From the locally-made Italian velvet headboard with contrast trim in the master to the colorful custom cabinetry in each bathroom, no detail was spared.
