How Layered Textures Made This Modern Family Home
While the sleek architectural lines and modern open floor plan drew the homeowners to their family home, they wanted to ensure that the furnishings felt livable and inviting for their lifestyle with two small children. After reaching out to interior firm Lucas Browning Design, they landed in a direction that would warm up the space and fill up the home with furnishings that functioned well for their day-to-day while still making an aesthetic impact.
Located in sunny Studio City, CA, this modern new-build is complete with ample entertaining space, plenty of room for family gatherings, and jaw-dropping moments that set each room apart from the next.

Softening Architectural Lines
Carefully selected furnishings and intimate furniture configurations soften the modern architectural lines of the home and add an element of coziness throughout. A mix of bold statements and quieter pieces make the living room inviting and interesting, while unexpected colors set the tone for the remainder of the home. This moody living space is a masterclass on the impact of blending warm and cool tones when done right and a great reminder that so much of a well-designed room is about balance.
Incorporating Textural Interest
The Lucas Browning team leaned into the home’s bones and unique paneling and architectural detail to influence the remainder of the selections. Aiming to highlight the build, they chose furnishings that brought in interest with layered texture and avoided too much pattern.
In the dining room, a woven sea-green wallcovering adds depth and warmth, perfectly contrasted by wood paneling above and a long oval dining table for entertaining friends and family. A complimenting area rug grounds the room and matches the wall coverings to tie the look together.
A Warm Modern Kitchen
A modern kitchen is warmed up by an oak hood and matching island and cabinetry details that compliment the blue-black painted cabinetry and stools. Functional extras, like the double sinks, pot filler, and butler’s pantry, add customization to the design and simplify hosting for the homeowner’s family.
Indoor Outdoor Living
Taking advantage of the Los Angeles weather, the Lucas Browning team invited the outdoors in by extending the living space into the backyard. Large sliding doors allow easy access to the lounge space furnished with chic weather-resistant but ultra-comfortable pieces. We can only imagine how incredible hosting here would be!
