A Playful & Bold San Francisco Craftsman

When designer Christina Higham of Sun Soul Style Interiors first toured this 1903 San Francisco Craftsman, she saw that it had lost much of its character and soul after many flips and renovations. Wall-to-wall carpeting covered up the original wood floors, the colors felt bleak, and some of the historic details had been removed over time. Working with her clients to revive the home’s charm, she helped them create a space that reflected their personal styles while providing more function to their daily routines.

Because the couple had previously lived in rentals, one of the goals of this project was, first and foremost, to help incorporate both of their aesthetics and define their style as a couple. While his taste tended to skew more moody, with dark accent walls and rich leathers, she gravitated toward more feminine spaces that were lighter and brighter.

In addition to considering merging the couple’s styles, the home’s historic Craftsman roots drove many of the design decisions. Christina wanted to highlight the home’s unique architectural details of paneling, moldings, and built-in cabinetry through accent paint and wallpaper. Luxurious velvets and darker paint make the project feel cozy while speaking to its rich history, contrasted with more modern, funky art and wallpaper that speak to the homeowner’s aesthetics and tastes.

Scroll through to see how Christina helped her clients transform this outdated craftsman into a charming and playful home.

A chic navy kitchen

Apart from updating the kitchen to make it more functional for the new homeowners, Christina wanted to infuse some life back into the space with all-white walls and cabinets. After updating the countertops, Christina painted the existing cabinets a light navy blue color that helps the beautiful wood floors sing.

The bold powder room

Creating an experience for guests in the powder room sometimes means taking risks and leaning into bold and moody moments, especially where you have minimal light. In the powder bathroom, a playful and bold wallpaper makes a statement against a striking navy floating vanity, brass hardware accents, and a complimenting green penny tile.

Pattern Wallpapered Bathroom

A playful primary

While Christina had the walls of the primary bedroom painted in bright white, patterned detail and a thoughtful palette helped bring it to life and tie this space into the home’s playful color story. Sea-green tiles peeking in from the bathroom draw the eye in, and a patterned custom-upholstered Zak and Fox headboard brings in some personality.
