How This Designer Honored History in a 1927 Spanish Revival
If there’s one throughline of intentionally-designed spaces, it’s that the home reflects its surroundings. Today’s home tour, designed by Selena Michele Interiors, set above the coastline in San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs, feels like the perfect reflection of its serene setting. This 1927 Spanish Revival home captured its homeowners’ hearts with its arched doorways, wrought-iron details, and sweeping ocean views.
The challenge came in translating that feeling into a livable, personal home. Moving from a mid-century modern space, the clients quickly realized their existing furnishings didn’t align with this new chapter. With Selena Michele Interiors, they set out to honor the home’s historic character while redefining their style. The result is a thoughtful blend of modern pieces, family heirlooms, and organic elements—an interior that feels layered, lived-in, and deeply reflective of the people who call it home.

A Warm Welcome
The entry vestibule is compact but intentional, designed to set the tone the moment you step inside. Arched doorways highlight the home’s history, while a chic settee provides a place for the comings and goings of daily life. An original piece of art by the client’s uncle hangs prominently, immediately signaling that this is a home rooted in personality.

Notably, the original plaster walls were preserved throughout the home, with no new paint introduced—an intentional decision that honors the integrity and character of the 1927 structure.
Designed for Connection
As the first major space you encounter, the living room needed to feel inviting without disrupting flow. Selena designed the layout to encourage hosting and lingering, all while framing the arched windows and doors that open to sweeping ocean views. Here, the architecture and landscape become part of the experience—an ever-present backdrop that defines the room.

A Restful Retreat
In the primary bedroom, the design centers on what the room already does best: showcasing ocean views and original architectural moments. Furniture placement highlights the fireplace and intricate alcove, allowing these historic details to shine. Above the bed, a custom piece by artist Katie Gong adds sculptural interest without overpowering the space, reinforcing the calm feel of the room.

Cozy and Considered
The family room was designed with movie nights in mind, but care was taken not to compromise the room’s original features. Earthy, neutral furnishings ground the space while allowing the original fireplace and double-door views to remain unobstructed. The result is a room that feels cozy and relaxed without competing with its architectural beauty.

Entertaining with Ease
Because the homeowners love to entertain, the dining room was designed to comfortably host large gatherings. A vintage rug introduces soul and character, while bespoke plants frame the space and connect it to the greenery woven throughout the home. It’s a room that feels welcoming, layered, and ready for long, lively meals.
