A Colorful Austin Bungalow Remodel

When designer Shannon Eddings and her team met the new homeowners of this Austin craftsman-style bungalow, it had been several years since the home’s last update. With a dated and dark, closed-off layout, the space needed a refresh. Shannon stepped in to help with a complete gut renovation, including a second-story addition to add function and space for the family.

New additions

The home was taken down to the studs for the most part, with a back-of-the-house addition that included a family room and a second story with a new primary suite. A succinct entryway was also created, with the layering of the original shiplap and wallpaper, becoming an intriguing and fun way to make a statement to guests who may not even step inside the home. The formal living room, dining room, and kitchen all encompass one space that represents the “original” part of the 1930’s home.

Living Room Velvet Chairs

Restoring original details

When demolition began, Shannon found the original shiplap on the walls and ceiling and immediately campaigned to save some of it. They landed on keeping it unpainted on the ceiling, which became essential to the home’s overall aesthetic, helping hone the balance of old and new. In the dining room, a vintage dining table and chandelier nod to the ceiling and contrast perfectly with the new pieces sprinkled throughout.

Dining Room and Cabinet Storage

A rich & sophisticated palette

The homeowner’s love for moody colors guided the design toward a sophisticated palette — from brown cabinets (the client’s idea) to a saturated blue living room. Shannon and her team experimented with rich tones while maintaining a cohesive palette, tying the hues together through traditional patterns in wallpaper and window treatments.

Blending old & new

A blend of timeless and modern elements brings a fresh take to the design, and Shannon expertly paired vintage with new to balance each vignette. A mix of timeless patterns, like the Lisa Fine fabric on the kitchen window and living room Roman shades, and modern elements, like the living room chandelier, create the perfect contrast.
