A Rustic Chic Park City Mountain Home

It’s hard to imagine a more ideal space to entertain, cozy up with a good book, or spend the last few days of the year than a rustic mountain home. Today’s home tour, designed by Jeff & Johnna of J Studios, is nestled in the mountains of Park City, Utah, surrounded by sweeping views of the vast open landscape that influences the materials throughout.

After purchasing the space, the homeowner came to Jeff & Johnna to help soften the modern architecture and create a retreat that felt equal parts chic and inviting. Inspired by the idea of designing around seasonality, mixing materials, and bringing the outdoors in, they transformed the home into a personality-filled retreat.

A Nature-Inspired Material Palette

In efforts to be as sustainable as possible and reuse materials available to them, J Studios reincorporated many of the exterior elements throughout the interior. Brick from the exterior sets the tone of the kitchen and softens the modern architectural lines, creating a warm and inviting feeling in the heart of the home. At the same time, the steel perimeter was recycled throughout the space and even became part of the primary bedroom’s headboard.

This kitchen is a perfect example of how impactful continuing materials to the ceiling can be, whether it’s through the cabinetry itself or unexpected materials like the stone incorporated here.

Designing Around Seasonality

Like many of our favorite projects, J Studios designed this home with seasonality in mind, knowing it would serve as a mountainside retreat for both winter and summer activities. Large windows throughout the property bring the outdoors in regardless of the weather and add a lot of light to cold winter days. The contrast in the Park City mountains also inspired the material palette and furnishings — a balance between summer and winter, industrial and cozy, modern and time-honored.

Softening Contemporary Lines

While Jeff and Johnna wanted to connect with the contemporary elements of the architecture, they brought in quite a few vintage pieces and accessories to soften the lines and create an inviting space. Found pottery, artwork, and textiles throughout the home add character and coziness to this modern new build.

In the dining room, upholstered chairs, wooden ceiling beams, textural artwork, and brass accents bring warmth to the sleek white walls. Who else is dreaming about entertaining their friends and family here?
