A West-Coast Inspired Bedford NY Home
When designer Maggie Smith’s clients relocated from London back to New York and purchased their 7,500-square-foot home, they knew it needed a bit of a facelift. Nestled in charming Bedford, NY, the home represented a quiet escape from their city roots. The location and surroundings allowed them to experiment with different styles, blending their love for modern and traditional elements.
Prior to their move, the clients undertook a swift renovation, giving the home a fresh coat of paint, refinishing the wood floors, and creating a clean slate for the design process. Inspired by the home’s traditional architectural roots and the expansive landscape, Maggie set out to curate a space that would embody the clients’ love for a relaxed West Coast style. Together, they created a beautiful home that perfectly reflects the client’s lifestyles and personalities while bringing more function and style to the property. A Modern & Traditional Mix
Blending styles is a great way to create a curated look in an interior, but it’s easier said than done. While the clients had a strong vision for their space and aesthetic, they aligned with Maggie and her penchant for mixing styles, leaving room for the unexpected pieces to shine. Traditional white-painted cabinetry in the kitchen contrasts the contemporary living room pieces peeking in from the next room and brings a light-and-airy feeling to the heart of the home.
Textural Additions
Achieving a contemporary look with dimension typically requires plenty of layers of texture, and we love how Maggie incorporated vintage pieces throughout to add depth and interest. In the dining room, a custom wooden table by Petersen Antiques, a vintage Tuareg rug, and leather dining chairs set the tone for a chic and relaxed gathering space.
A Warm + Understated Palette
Maggie carried the minimal palette through to the primary bedroom, where an upholstered bed centers the room and creates a serene look and feel. Custom floating nightstands ground the show-stopping Luke Kamp sconces, and a custom wave chaise lounge by Adrian Pearsall via 1st Dibs recovered in sheepskin provides the perfect nook.
