Inside a Colorful Austin Home That’s Playful, Vintage-Inspired, and Kid-Friendly
In Austin, Texas, a new build gets all the personality, thanks to designer Shannon Eddings. With moody hues, Round Top vintage, and family-friendly finishes, this home proves new construction doesn’t have to feel cookie-cutter.
Designing a family home that’s equal parts stylish, practical, and personality-packed is no small task, especially when you’re working with a 3,800-square-foot blank slate. For this new build in Austin’s Crestview neighborhood, Shannon Eddings embraced the challenge head-on, layering gorgeous vintage finds sourced from Round Top, a primary-hued color palette, and thoughtful design moments that blend form with function. It’s a house built on contrast: Danish chairs next to Crate & Barrel table lamps, vintage art paired with checkerboard tile, a high-low mix that shows up in every room and somehow makes perfect sense.

A Soulful Foundation of Vintage and New
Throughout the home, vintage pieces from Round Top serve as grounding elements in each room, adding warmth, patina, and a sense of history to a new build that could have easily gone too sleek. In the living room, vintage chairs were reupholstered in a rich Jasper fabric, paired with bold Fleurons d’Hélène window treatments.

The dining room layers Danish dining chairs and a sideboard (both Round Top scores) with modern Crate & Barrel lamps and a piece by local artist Alexandra Valenti. There seems to be a recurring theme throughout the home: nothing feels too perfect or too precious.

A Kitchen Designed for Function
In contrast to the color-forward palette elsewhere in the house, the kitchen is a rare moment of white: a practical, pared-back space designed for serious cooking and serious storage. Cabinets are streamlined and smart, maximizing function over flash. The mix of materials is what makes this room stand out: walnut dining chairs contrast with the black kitchen island, brass hardware adds warmth to the soft cabinetry, and a zellige tile backsplash brings just the right amount of texture.

Just off the kitchen, a wood-paneled mudroom painted in a moody plum adds warmth and utility, designed with the daily school drop-off routine in mind.

A Color-Drenched Office That Works Hard Behind the Scenes
The home office was designed to adapt to both the changing light and the rhythm of a busy workday. As the backdrop for frequent video shoots and creative work, the room needed to feel elevated without being overly styled. Color wraps the walls, setting a focused tone, while nearly every piece of furniture is vintage, including a well-worn Chesterfield chair sourced from Round Top.

Kid Zones That Go Bold Without Going Overboard
Upstairs, a playroom painted in Farrow & Ball’s Hay feels like a treehouse, complete with vintage leather chairs, cozy corners, and a stunning blue performance velvet sofa built to handle hangout nights and juice spills alike. The kids’ bedrooms are just as colorful, while their shared bathroom is a smart mix of style and function, featuring honed marble checkerboard floors and classic fixtures. Every detail is designed with kids in mind, without compromising on style or substance.
