This LA Home Is a Masterclass In Mixing Dark & Light Materials
Today’s home tour, designed by Gabrielle Aker of Aker Interiors, is a masterclass in the push and pull of dark and light material elements, contrast, and neutrality. The clients, who had purchased their Los Angeles home built in 1938, were looking to remodel the first and second floors of the house with all new materials, update the exterior, and add new windows and doors to this beautiful home. Gabrielle and her team guided them through transforming this space into a cozy and personal home with plenty of form and function throughout. A bold & cozy living room
The intention for the living room was to create a layered space that was calm, rich, interesting, and functional all at the same time. While Gabrielle played with various rug options, none of them achieved the balance she was looking for until they tried the Agra rug in Juniper by Armadillo & Co. The deep green tone grounds the room and creates the foundation for the other tones and textures used throughout the space.
The contemporary chic kitchen
If the kitchen is the heart of the home, this one is the soul. Because the homeowner is an excellent cook and uses her kitchen to the fullest, Gabrielle and her team made sure to consider the layout, spatial configuration, and functionality of each element extra carefully. While other rooms in the home exude moments of drama and eclecticism, the vision for the kitchen was clean and restrained with a focus on flow and movement.
A luxurious primary bath
The primary bathroom welcomes you with a bold stone moment setting the tone for the serene and luxurious space. The Tempest and Frost field tile from Fireclay Tile brings a timelessness to the room, while the Cathedral Sconce by Allied Maker adds raw sophistication. The blend of materials in this design brings the perfect amount of wow-factor without overwhelming the eye.
A warm & modern primary bedroom
Portola Paint’s Roman Clay welcomes you into the primary bedroom and adds a wash of color and texture to the space. A custom Beni rug grounds the room and adds another element of warmth contrasted by a subtle green stripe, while the orange velvet bed frame completes the look.
