As we race towards the finish line of The Austin Tudor, my mind has been swirling around the best modern lamps. Jake Arnold once told me to find inspiration in other people’s work, not in the entirety of the room, but the individual elements. While I research my favorite spaces making notes I can translate to our own home, I’ve identified a common theme: luxe, moody interiors always have modern lighting. We’ve often heard that lighting is the item you should invest in, but we’ve never been sold on it because there are so many less expensive duplicates out there. This week in the office, we were discussing why lighting should be an investment piece and it became clear:
- Lighting doesn’t wear down or wear out.
- Lighting is used daily, and lamps are touched multiple times a day.
- A quality modern lamp can provide a sculptural quality to a room, doubling as art.

The key to sourcing great lighting at any price point is to opt for natural materials. Brass, marble, teak and walnut are all timeless materials in contemporary shapes.
