A Cozy & Fresh Halifax Remodel
After a year of living in their space, the homeowners of today’s tour decided it was time to refresh their once-dark 2003 Tuscan-style home and curate something that better reflected their lifestyle. They reached out to Maja Owens, senior designer at Stil James, to help them with a gut renovation of the property that took it from dark and masculine to chic, cozy, and inspired.
While the homeowners weren’t set on a specific aesthetic or vision when they began the design plans, they knew they wanted the home to be lighter, brighter, and filled with personality. Through working with Maja and her team to identify their style, they dreamed up a palette of natural wood, green accents, and plenty of textures to bring dimension to every corner.

A Grand Focal Point
A 7.5-foot wide fireplace sets the tone for the interiors and acts as a grand focal point for this family gathering space. Maja chose a creamy-white Venetian plaster for the surround and matched the walls with a coat of Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore for a minimal but warm hue throughout. While the home’s floorplan remains open and airy, an added stained wood beam separates the kitchen and family room, dividing the living room’s open shelving and kitchen cabinetry.
A Tactile Palette
While the homeowners were weary of color when they began their project, Maja found ways to infuse plenty of texture and mixed materials without compromising a neutral palette. In the kitchen, a mix of patinaed metals, plaster, and natural woods brings a tactile feeling to the heart of the home, giving it a lived-in look.
The Venetian plaster used on the fireplace surround carries over to the range alcove and keeps the texture and feel consistent. Ocean Blue Quartzite countertops perfectly contrast the light and bright elements of the space and add the perfect amount of subtle color in the process.
Designed to Entertain
Maja designed smart solutions to suit the homeowner’s lifestyle — including a chic built-in bar nook for the dining room with beautiful custom cabinetry in a playful blue-green hue. A woven light above the dining table sets the tone for the warmth of the space, and mixed upholstered seating invites comfort into the design. Who wouldn’t want to host friends in a space like this?
