Classic Meets Contemporary in a Minnesota Family Home
When New York–based designer Hilary Matt was first approached about this home in Edina, Minnesota, the connection happened in the most modern of ways: through Instagram. The homeowner, a mother of four, had been following Hilary’s work for some time and was drawn to her clean, neutral aesthetic—one that manages to feel both strong and sophisticated, yet family-friendly.
A quick DM turned into a dream collaboration, with Hilary and her team brought in at the very beginning of the build to shape every detail alongside Murphy & Co Design and Hendel Homes. The result? A timeless new build that balances traditional bones and European influences with contemporary edge. It’s bright and fresh without ever feeling stark, layered with tactile finishes, bespoke millwork, and just the right amount of unexpected detail.

A Grand First Impression
The home’s foyer sets the tone with custom travertine and Nero Marquina marble flooring laid in a bold checkerboard pattern. The idea was sparked when Hilary discovered the slabs in a Paris showroom, instantly envisioning them cut and paired together for an Old World yet modern effect. A sculptural console anchors the space—though, as Hilary notes with a laugh, it had to be ordered three times after breaking in transit.

Family Living with a Hidden Twist
In the formal living room, tailored millwork by Hendel Homes acts as the focal point, concealing a hidden door that leads directly into the children’s playroom. “It was important to give the kids their own space close by, without letting toys take over the formal areas,” Hilary explains. A custom Muskoka Living sectional and Pierre Augustine Rose nested coffee tables strike the perfect balance of durable and refined, while a broadloom Stark Carpet was cut to size for a tailored grounding layer.

A Kitchen Made for Gathering
At the heart of the home, the kitchen embraces a classic layout with a contemporary twist: parallel islands topped in Taj Mahal quartzite. The stone sweeps up behind a statement Lacanche range, while another hidden door, camouflaged in the millwork, leads to a butler’s pantry. Counter stools by Sean Woolsey and a sculptural Dumæ vase soften the crisp lines with artisanal warmth.
Off to the side, the breakfast nook features a custom marble bench paired with Blu Dot chairs and a Lulu & Georgia table, capped by an Aerin pendant for Visual Comfort.

Light-Filled Spaces
The sunroom celebrates the home’s architecture with soaring windows and a second fireplace, making the space inviting well beyond summer. Furnished with a Restoration Hardware coffee table and a whimsical Iskos-Berlin pendant, it serves as a relaxed entertaining space with an emphasis on natural light.

Spaces for Every Age
Every member of the family received a space tailored to them. In the girls’ bedroom, RH bunk beds pair playfulness with functionality, while the bathroom continues the checkerboard motif in travertine and Nero Marquina marble, accented by monogrammed Weezie towels. The nursery is anchored by Liberty wallpaper, a Kalon Studios crib, and a cozy West Elm glider. The son’s bedroom takes a slightly more graphic approach with a Schoolhouse lamp and artwork by Bradley Duncan.
Even the playroom received thoughtful attention, with Schumacher’s Trace wallpaper lining the walls and an RH sofa keeping things casual yet stylish.
