A Soulful Newport Beach Retreat
When Patricia Alvarenga, founder of Sage Design Studio, first connected with her Newport Beach client, it quickly became clear this was more than just a design project—it was about creating a home that truly reflected her life. The homeowner, a retired woman with a love for travel and antiques, wanted her space to feel personal and lived-in. She wasn’t interested in following trends, but in celebrating the stories behind the pieces she had collected over the years. Patricia shared that vision, and the two worked closely to bring it to life.
Together, they collaborated to bring this 1995 Eastern Seaboard–style home to life, reimagined with warmth, character, and a sense of connection. Every detail was chosen to feel authentic and timeless, turning the house into a sanctuary by the sea.

A Kitchen Rooted in Craft
The heart of the home is an airy kitchen that now opens seamlessly into the dining and living areas, unveiling sweeping ocean views. At its center, a custom black Vent-A-Hood with antique brass straps anchors the room in timeless sophistication, paired with a sculptural Ilve Majestic Range in matching black and brass.
Cabinetry in Rift-Cut White Oak—wire-brushed and finished in a custom “Toasted Honey” stain—evokes the softness of aged wood, warm to the touch. A backsplash of parchment-hued basketweave zellige from New Ravenna adds artisanal texture, while leathered Taj Mahal quartzite countertops balance strength with delicacy. Visual Comfort fixtures and custom Palecek counter stools finish the space with understated luxury.

A Great Room with Spirit
Coastal casual blends with a bit of glam in the great room. Inspired by the client’s Ming Dynasty Horses and Warrior sculpture, the design feels storied and personal.
A Francois & Co. Cleo Mantle fireplace surround, bordered with original salvaged brick, offers texture and depth, while chinoiserie accents nod to the client’s affinity for timeless Eastern aesthetics. The restrained palette allows her treasures to take center stage.

Dining Details
The dining room strikes a balance between old-world charm and lighthearted elegance. Patricia reimagined the client’s vintage bamboo table, pairing it with updated chairs that highlight natural texture without tipping into rustic. Overhead, a vintage-inspired Robert Long chandelier brings in dimensional lighting.

A Gallery Office & Private Retreat
Beyond the bedroom doors, a sun-drenched corridor became a gallery office—a place to work and create while soaking in sea breezes. A vintage Danish desk from 1stDibs and a custom blue credenza, crafted to house sewing and gift-wrapping supplies, make this nook both personal and functional.

The Primary Bedroom itself is a study in serenity. A custom bed upholstered in McLaurin & Piercy fabric anchors the space, while bespoke bedside tables add quiet luxury. Patricia chose every textile and layer to create a restful atmosphere.

In the adjoining bath, marble slabs sweep across walls and floors for a seamless, spa-like retreat. A fleur-de-lis motif etched into the stone offers a poetic nod to heritage amidst the clean, minimal lines. Samuel & Heath fixtures in polished chrome add subtle refinement.

Guest Quarters with a Personal Touch
The guest quarters feel like a private pied-à-terre. With a fully appointed kitchenette, an intimate dining nook, and cozy bedrooms dressed in classic patterns and soft linens, every visitor is welcomed with thoughtful hospitality. Yorktown Blue cabinetry in the kitchenette adds depth, balanced by crisp Simply White walls throughout.
