A Frog Town Bungalow Gut Renovation
Designer Emily Brownell of Gilded Hearth Interiors first connected with her clients in the framing process of their home renovation. After a few years of renting the Los Angeles house, they had an opportunity to purchase and remodel the space. While initially working with a design-build firm on the project, they were underwhelmed with the options and ultimately decided to go in a different direction and work with Emily on a complete re-design. Together, they added two new bathrooms and revamped the bathroom, primary bedroom, two kids’ spaces, and the main living and dining space.
Because the clients had been renting their home previously, they were already familiar with the footprint and knew what they wanted to update to suit the needs of their growing family. Emily worked with them to make every inch functional and designed with a neutral textural palette while incorporating the client’s rich art collection from growing up in a family of artists. The final result is equal parts form and function, complete with custom storage solutions, a cozy breakfast nook, and plenty of space to grow into.

A Warm & Inviting Living Space
An open floor plan in the living space welcomes you inside and introduces the warm, pared-back palette of the home. Custom wood cabinetry extended from the kitchen provides extra storage, allowing the materials to flow from room to room effortlessly.

Intentional Planning in the Kitchen
Because the footprint of the space is small, intentional space planning was crucial. Emily designed the kitchen and nook area to open up into the main living space of the home seamlessly, with a cohesive palette that left plenty of room for creativity. A custom corner breakfast nook adds coziness and makes the most of the room. The kitchen’s oak cabinetry lays the groundwork for the home’s feeling, providing a warm, neutral tone that compliments the soft goods.

The Moody Plastered Powder
While they maintained a very organic modern aesthetic throughout most of the home, the powder room felt like the perfect opportunity to take a bold risk. After some initial pushback from the client, this moody powder became their favorite space. Forest Floor Roman Clay by Portola Paints adds texture and depth to the walls, while a floating wood and marble vanity balances the drama.

A Minimal & Vibrant Primary Bedroom
In the primary bedroom, Emily created a minimal yet vibrant retreat centered around her client’s art. This space feels like the perfect in-home getaway, complete with a beautifully crafted wood bed and nightstands, lightweight linens, and woven textures.
