A Modern Classic in Short Hills
Designer Kylie K. Bass never imagined that a chance reconnection with an old friend would lead to one of the most meaningful projects of her career. But when a former acquaintance reached out for help designing her family’s forever home in Short Hills, NJ, Kylie knew it was something special.
Set in a newly built Colonial-style residence, this home blends traditional East Coast architecture with a soft, transitional design sensibility. From the first sketch to the final accessory, Kylie and her team at KKB Interiors were involved in every detail—helping to shape a house that would grow and evolve alongside its people.
The timing made the experience even more personal: the clients welcomed their second child during the design process, and Kylie had the unique joy of designing a nursery that would greet a brand new life. “It was such a privilege,” she shares. “This wasn’t just about creating a beautiful home—it was about building something deeply personal and lasting.”

A Warm Welcome
The entrance sets the tone for the home’s material palette with warm wood herringbone floors, timeless wall-treatment details, and a carefully curated drop-zone for out-the-door essentials. KKB used Benjamin Moore’s White Dove on the walls throughout the space for a warm-neutral that easily transitions from room to room.

Material Mix in the Kitchen
A combination of white and natural wood cabinetry, paired with stunning Artistic Tile countertops and a handcrafted zellige backsplash, strikes the perfect balance between modern elegance and warmth in the kitchen. KKB effortlessly blends wood tones in this space, mixing lights, darks, and whites from the floors to the ceiling. Smart storage details like the accordion pantry doors add function to hideaway everyday essentials and clear the countertops of clutter, while a larger butler’s pantry brings additional prep space.

Bold Decisions in the Primary Bath
A wood accent wall in the primary bath adds an unexpected layer of warmth and depth, complementing the elegant, modern mosaic tile flooring. A coordinating custom vanity completes the look and brings yet another layer of depth and contrast to the otherwise light and bright space.

The Fireside Family Room
A soft, layered mix of textiles, a limestone fireplace surround, and classic upholstered chairs create a cozy, inviting room for family gatherings. Subtle patterns in the mix bring in a playful look with soft checkers and stripes. Right off the family room, a moody wet bar brings extra entertaining space and adds an unexpected design element that feels like a hidden gem for guests.
