East Coast Design Elements Inspired This California Home
When the South Harlow team started working with their Boston native client on today’s home tour, they were set on bringing their East Coast aesthetic to California. Carefully curating a feeling of charm, character, and relaxed lived-in elements, the team helped identify architectural design and direction and designed all hard and soft finish materials from millwork to draperies.
The South Harlow team focused on natural materials to create an elegant, functional, livable home that feels elevated and designed down to the littlest detail — from the outdoor tumbled limestone pavers leading up to the refined Dutch iron door to the naturally finished skinny oak paneled floors. The result feels relaxed and rustic with plenty of texture through wallpaper, zellige tiles, antique elements, and a butcher block kitchen countertop.
While the team kept the home modern, the design nods to traditional elements through the transom windows, millwork details, and the custom cast stone fireplace. Playful uses of wallpaper, patterns, paint color, and unique furniture and soft goods bring it to life and help tell the client’s stories.

A Timeless Kitchen
In the kitchen, nods to the East Coast continue with a timeless material palette and traditional-style cabinetry. A grey-blue island sets off the space, contrasted by a butcher block countertop and bold gold legs. Subtly patterned window treatments pull in the wallpaper from the adjacent dining nook, and wood ceiling beams compliment the nook archway.
Open & Collected Living Spaces
One of the client’s initial requests was that the primary living spaces flow together and create an open-concept feeling between the kitchen and living space. To keep the feeling open and bring distinction between the dining, kitchen, and living rooms, the South Harlow team designed a beautiful transition with the glass divide and sweet desk moment between the living and dining spaces. A subtle textured wallpaper adds dimension to this room, while timeless furniture pieces pull the space together.
A Custom Bunk Room
South Harlow designed a custom pink bunk bed with scalloped edge details and a timeless gold rail that makes a statement in this charming bunk room. Coordinating bunk and window curtains add a touch of pattern to the room, while subtly printed bedding brings even more charm.
A Patterned Guest Suite
A patterned floral wallpaper speaks volumes in the guest suite, complemented by pretty blue contrast trim. A wooden spindle bed brings a timeless touch to the space and the client’s artwork hangs over to center the space.
