Inside a Colorful Family Home Filled With Unexpected Tile

When they first began their project, designer Annie Downing’s clients had two guidelines for their Austin family home: make it fun and no white walls. Luckily, Annie is known for her bold and playful interiors, leaving no detail unconsidered when it comes to material and personality. With her clients’ trust in the process, Annie got to work infusing soul into the newly constructed interior, ensuring nothing was too precious for their lifestyle. The result is colorful, classic, and contemporary, making it the perfect backdrop for the homeowner’s boisterous family life.

While finish selections often fade into the background of an interior, Annie’s expertise in selecting bold tiles, wallpapers, and lighting pieces sets each space in this home apart. The homeowner’s San Antonio roots and love of travel inspired many of her choices, like the warm Clay Imports tile in the shower bath and the green stucco exterior. It’s always a treat to see a home that tells a different story in each room, and we love how the palettes throughout this home speak to each other without falling flat.

A Pattern-filled Living Room

In the living room, the choice of a bright white feels intentional when paired with a coordinating sofa and yellow patterned curtains. The organic pattern on the rug brings even more interest, pulling in tones from the curtains to tie the space together and make the perfect first impression.

The Cozy Dining Nooks

In the dining room and breakfast nook, round tables facilitate easy conversation. Each room employs a fearless approach to color and pattern, inviting you into the color story of the remainder of the home. You might have seen these Blu Dot dining chairs before, but they’ve never felt so at home as they do among terracotta floor tiles and lime-washed blue walls.

A Bright Blue Kitchen

In the kitchen, a Tabarka concrete tile inlay with brass peeks out of a marble-topped waterfall island. Leather stools warm up the space, and open-shelving flanking the hood is styled with functional everyday-use decor. White Zellige tiles on the backsplash draw your eye to the blue-green tile and cabinets even more, making a case for push and pull when it comes to color selections.

The Out-of-the-box Bathroom Materials

Each bathroom has a colorful tile arranged in an unexpected pattern, like the pink and green tile in an almost random checkerboard pattern in their daughter’s bath. Special textiles and wallpapers from artists like Paule Marrot and Kelly Wearstler paired with personal art framed throughout the home make this space truly one-of-a-kind.
