Inside a Vibrant Spanish Bungalow
After relocating to Los Angeles in 2018, designer Courtney Robinson’s clients discovered their Spanish-style bungalow in the city’s heart and knew it had potential. This family of five needed a space that fit everyone comfortably and met their needs for style and comfort. Courtney and her firm, Materials + Methods Design, worked closely with the couple to ensure the major hubs of the home functioned and lived well, creating the space of their dreams in the process.
From new floor plans to updated plumbing, Courtney carefully refreshed every detail of this home to honor the family’s lifestyle. Working with her clients, she helped curate an arrangement of artworks to celebrate their roots, heritage, and community and fill their walls with memorable representations for their children. Each detail comes together to create a vibrant, personality-filled family home.

Original Details in The Living Room
The existing living room had great bones and a few original architectural details worth highlighting. Courtney re-designed this space with the ceiling beams and arches in mind, highlighting these details with a black-and-white palette. They transformed a once dry-walled, wood-burning fireplace into a functional focal point for the family to gather around and added color through the rug and textiles.

A Streamlined Kitchen Refresh
Before Courtney began working on the kitchen, the space was overcrowded and laid out poorly. Opening the wall connecting the kitchen and dining rooms created a more communal feeling, allowing for a better flow throughout these most frequented spaces. A high-contrast palette makes a dramatic presence, complemented by a beautiful terracotta accent wall and ceiling moment in the dining space.

A Revived Contemporary Bathroom
Every home remodel has that one space with a lot of untapped potential — in this home, it was the hallway bathroom. While the room had plenty of square footage, it needed some restructuring to function well. After closing off an entrance to the primary bedroom and relocating the vanity to make room for a double sink, Courtney replaced the built-in bathroom with a nice soaking tub. With three kids in the house, this updated space is much more functional for the whole family.

A chic black, white, and blue palette brings this space a contemporary, classic feeling while streamlined plumbing and tile selections elevate the design.
Fun-filled Kids’ Room Details
Kids’ spaces are always some of our favorites; this creative, fun-filled design is no exception. Courtney’s clients encouraged her to design with fantasy and imagination, giving her creative freedom to experiment with playful design elements. Wallpapered floral ceilings add an unexpected fifth wall element, while white walls balance the room. Fun and functional additions, like the reading wall and imagination corner, invite play. A pair of full-size daybeds with pull out trundles allow the room to sleep up to eight people, designed for future sleepovers.
