A strong distaste for ‘the big light’ has been a huge point of discussion in online design circles. The conversation began last year on TikTok when a video about “never turning on the big light” went viral, sparking a much larger debate about the importance of lighting design. It comes as no surprise to expert interior designers, who have long championed swapping harsh overhead lights in favor of table lamps that create a more inviting, ambient atmosphere. The right layered lighting plan not only softens the mood but also creates an opportunity for new materials and textures, turning a potentially sterile room into a warm, design-forward space.

In this edition of our source guide series, we’ll explore designer-approved lamps that strike a balance of form and function, with ready-to-ship options for every room in the home.

1. Table Lamps in the Bedroom

While sconces are an excellent space-saving option, there’s something inherently timeless about matching table lamps on nightstands. Bedside table lamps tend to be larger in size and scale, introducing textures and materials that add both visual interest and a sense of balance to the room. These lamps offer a soft, focused glow perfect for reading or creating a cozy ambiance, like this linen and rattan table lamp featured in designer Katie Monkhouse’s recent work.

2. Table Lamps in the Kitchen

Back in 2021, we predicted the rise of tabletop lighting in the kitchen. While an unconventional choice, kitchen table lamps are perfect for warming up utilitarian spaces and creating an inviting, homey vibe. Designers like Heidi Caillier, Kate Abt, and Alison Giese continually put this theory to the test, creating layers of ambiance in unexpected places.

3. Table Lamps in the Office

As work-from-home lifestyles become a permanent fixture, the need for thoughtfully designed home offices has only grown. A key element in any workspace is proper task lighting, especially for those late-night work sessions. But table lamps in the office don’t have to be an eyesore. Designers are increasingly sourcing incredible vintage finds to instill a sense of character, fostering both creativity and focus.

4. Table Lamps in the Living Spaces

Many designers would agree that living room table lamps should have an interesting sculptural quality. These lamps are about so much more than function—they often command attention and act as conversation pieces. It’s all about embracing bold designs that complement the room’s aesthetic while standing out as artful elements in their own right. Once again, vintage is always a great choice, as seen in the living room of The Austin Tudor.
