Step Inside This 1890s Texas Craftsman
This 1890s Craftsman project by designer Christina Cruz in Columbus, Texas, began with clients who wanted to reimagine their new home’s layout. With a goal to enhance the property’s functionality, they set out to create a more usable space for their family while honoring its original charm and rich history. Eager to pay homage to its legacy, they envisioned a minimalist aesthetic infused with modern touches. The result is a cozy and beautiful family home that is the perfect example of how to marry modern and traditional.
The home’s original floor plan featured an oversized laundry room and a built-in bathroom that left valuable space untapped. Through strategic reconfiguration, Christina helped transform these areas into purposeful spaces. The revised layout seamlessly integrates a laundry room, pantry, powder bathroom, and office, optimizing every square foot.

The Time-honored Living Room
The gorgeous oak trees surrounding the property set the tone for the charming living room and bring in color and texture to influence the interior’s design. A vintage Turkish rug adds warmth and depth to the living room and celebrates the home’s history, while a brass pendant light Christina found on Etsy adds a modern touch to the space’s traditional nature.
A Modern Lived-in Kitchen
Christina helped her clients reimagine the kitchen’s flow to open it up and make it feel like the heart and center of the home. The new layout promotes efficiency while providing easy access to the pool and patio. A statement-making chandelier perfectly showcases the square island, which serves as a gathering place for the family. Ceramic sconces enhance the overall ambiance with a nod to the past.
A Playful Entertaining Area
Pulling inspiration from a home’s surroundings is a tried-and-true way to create a color palette, and Christina demonstrated this beautifully in this home with the muted green cabinetry. In the dining space, the color continues with a playful, entertaining hutch moment.
The Parisian Primary Bedroom
Muted green plaster walls bring texture to this primary bedroom, complete with a dreamy brick fireplace, an iron bed frame, and a mix of vintage and modern accents that complete the design story. Doesn’t this space feel like an idyllic boutique hotel?
