Thoughtful Details Bring This Storied LA Bungalow To Life

When designer Alex Yeske imagined moving from New York to LA, her 1950s Bungalow was exactly the type of home she pictured living in. In the midst of her transition to a career in interior design, the home provided the perfect opportunity to serve as a testing ground for her ideas.

While there are plenty of flips in the city, Alex was initially drawn to the home for its light renovation work that left plenty of space to put her stamp on and have it grow with her family over the years. With plans to undertake a larger renovation in the future, Alex focused on small changes that brought more character and depth to the space. Each detail feels personal and storied, from carefully curated vintage pieces to intentional paint and wallpaper selections.

Pieces With History

In the move from New York to LA, Alex sold most of her furniture, so furnishing this home felt like starting with a blank slate. The few special pieces they brought set the tone for the space, and the rest added character sourced from flea markets, auctions, and local workrooms. Finding the pieces that resonated and worked perfectly in the space created a feeling of history. A pair of chairs from Alex’s grandmother’s house found a new home in the living room, making a creaking sound that takes her back to sitting in them in her house growing up.

Adding Patina Through Vintage

Although the home didn’t initially contain a lot of charm or detail, bringing in vintage and antique pieces warmed up the space and added a patina. Over time, sourcing from LA flea markets and estate sales led Alex to some of her most treasured pieces — from the antique living room hutch to the vintage plates displayed in the dining nook.

A Cohesive Material Palette

Alex carefully incorporated elements in the home that felt warm and approachable, avoiding too-formal pieces. A consistent color and material palette ensured the spaces flowed nicely together, making the most of a small footprint. Colors and layers of subtle patterns help the home feel cohesive and intentional from room to room. In the hallway, a vintage-inspired wallpaper ties the whole house together. Glimpses of it from nearly every room in the house add dimension and character, bringing a subtle hint of blue to each space.
