Hues of Comfort: Sourcing Colored Bedding

The bedroom is experiencing a colorful revival as designers opt for vibrant hues and playful patterns in sheets, duvets, coverlets, quilts, and textiles. No longer exclusively for maximalists, colored bedding can offer a balanced approach when layered with neutral elements. Take cues from designers like Katie Monkhouse and Avery Cox to see how it’s done.

Much like the rest of interiors, the bedroom is experiencing a resurgence of color. Gone are the days of playing it safe with all-white bedding, as designers demonstrate a willingness to introduce vibrant hues and playful patterns into their clients’ sleeping quarters. This revitalization of color not only adds visual interest but also fosters a sense of warmth and personality in what’s often considered the most personal space of the home.

For those hesitant to fully commit to colored bedding, there are lower-stakes ways to partake in the trend. Swapping out pillow textiles in vibrant shades or introducing a patterned quilt can provide a temporary burst of color that’s easily rotated with the seasons. This approach of layering colored bedding with neutral elements like crisp white sheets or textural knit blankets offers a balanced approach, creating a playful yet sophisticated look that can adapt to evolving tastes—a perfect win-win scenario.

5 TIPS FOR STYLING COLORED BEDDING

  • Mix and Match: Don’t feel restricted to one solid color for your bedding. Experiment with mixing complementary-hued sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, and blankets to create a layered look.
  • Play with Texture: Consider the different textures of your colored bedding selections to add visual interest. For example, try mixed materials like breathable cotton sheets paired with a European linen duvet cover to introduce a more tactile element.
  •  Embrace Patterns: Incorporate patterned bedding for a playful effect. Whether it’s floral, geometric, or abstract designs, incorporating patterns can bring so much personality to the space.
  •  Layer with Neutrals: Balance colored bedding with neutral elements to prevent overwhelm. Introduce neutral throw blankets, accent pillows, or a solid-colored duvet cover to create an anchor and provide a calming balance to the ‘louder’ pieces.
  •  Shop Around: Parachute is a go-to for tonal, solid-colored staples, while Piglet in Bed and Schoolhouse excel at interesting color combinations and prints. You’ll also find excellent craftsmanship with artisan shops on Etsy.
