A Moody, Modern Makeover in McLean
What began as a vision for a functional family home quickly turned into a full-scale renovation—one that balanced style with soul for a young couple in McLean, Virginia. With designer Kristin Harrison of Georgia & Hunt Design House at the helm, the 1980s-built home was transformed into a layered, transitional retreat built for entertaining, relaxing, and raising their growing family (dogs included).
Tasked with designing a 4,700-square-foot home from top to bottom, Kristin set out to create spaces that felt distinct yet connected—moody in tone, modern in sensibility, and thoughtfully planned for real life. “The clients are a young couple—he’s a vet, she’s in medicine—and they needed their home to not only reflect their individual styles, but also function beautifully for life with a baby and pups,” says Kristin. From interior architecture and finish selections to custom furnishings and vintage finds, every room was given its own identity while maintaining a cohesive design narrative throughout.

A Room-by-Room Look Inside
If there’s an extra home luxury we could add to every space, it’s the breakfast nook. Flexing as the perfect spot for casual dining, homework sessions, and even work meetings, these spots are as versatile as they are charming. In this space, Kristin created a casual and inviting look, outfitted with a Four Hands table and chairs, a cozy bench-style sofa, and lighting from Visual Comfort. Kristin kept the palette clean here with Benjamin Moore’s “Pure White” to let the furnishings shine.

In the dining room, a little drama goes a long way. Color-drenched walls set the tone, and elevated furnishings add a cozy layer to the space. Custom wood details create an artful blend of high and low: a dining set from Four Hands, lighting from HVLG and Troy, and sculptural sconces by Mullan.

With an abundance of natural light and tree-lined windows, this secondary living space, which Kristin calls “the keeping room,” is as inviting as it is beautiful. Featuring a deep green Rohe sofa that grounds the space, Visual Comfort lighting adding warmth above, and a textural wood coffee table to bring the outdoors back in.

There’s no better place to take a design risk than the powder room, and this space proves the sentiment. In this design, a custom marble sink and an iron mirror from Four Hands meet Scalamandré wallpaper in a bold, elegant moment that shows off the home’s transitional edge.

In the living room, more HVLG lighting, Benjamin Moore “Pashmina” walls, and burled wood accents (including a standout Caracole table) lend a richness that’s both comfortable and elevated. An Italian custom fireplace mantle gives the room a true focal point—and a little extra drama.

The nursery wraps softness and sophistication into one space, thanks to a Philip Jeffries wallpaper and calm, layered textures throughout. In the mudroom and laundry area, Serena & Lily wallpaper pairs with Riad tile, Rejuvenation hardware, and Benjamin Moore’s ever-versatile “Pashmina” for a fresh, polished look that still feels family-friendly.

Design That Lives Well
From a visual standpoint, this project is moody and modern. But look closer and you’ll see a home designed to be lived in—where performance meets beauty, and no square inch is wasted.
“It was about finding balance,” says Kristin. “We wanted this home to reflect their lifestyle and evolve with them over time, while still feeling elevated and special.”
